There are moments when you are reminded not just of what you do—but why you do it. Local News Day, held April 9 at the historic Denver Press Club, was one of those moments.

From 5 to 8 p.m., the space was filled with journalists, publishers, supporters, and community members—all gathered with a shared understanding that local news is more than headlines. It is connection. It is accountability. It is community.
Led by Bucket List Community News publisher Vicky Collins, the evening brought together a collective of Denver-based newsrooms, each committed to telling neighborhood stories that might otherwise go unheard. It was inspiring to see so many voices aligned in purpose, especially knowing that more than 1,300 newsrooms across the country were participating in this inaugural Local News Day.
Among them was Denver Urban Spectrum, continuing its nearly four-decade commitment to amplifying diverse voices and sharing stories that inform, inspire, and uplift. Throughout the evening, conversations flowed easily—about challenges, certainly—but also about possibility. Sustainability, innovation, collaboration—all were on the table, but what stood out most was the shared passion for serving community.

A proclamation from Jared Polis recognizing April 9, 2026, as Local News Day added a meaningful note of recognition. Remarks from leaders including Laura Frank of COLab and Kimberly Spencer of the Colorado Media Project further underscored the importance of a strong, connected local news ecosystem.
As Publisher Rosalind “Bee” Harris shared during the evening, “Events like this remind us that we are stronger together. For nearly four decades, we’ve remained committed to telling the stories of our community—stories that inform, inspire, and uplift.” She added, “We truly appreciated the opportunity to connect, reflect, and stand alongside others doing this important work.”

Local News Day was more than a gathering—it was a reminder. When communities support local journalism, they are investing in their own voice, their own stories, and their own future.
