History

Publisher Rosalind J. Harris has been at the helm of this institution and has been able to expand and redesign the business, in spite of a consistent decline in the newspaper publishing industry. She is a supporter of the community, an advocate for youth and a successful businesswoman who is highly recognized and respected in society. As a champion of civic, business and nonprofit organizations, DUS has been the recipient of more than 100 professional and community service awards and has celebrated more than 34 successful years.

Expansion and growth over the years include an amplified online presence with a redesigned website, e-Publications, e-Newsletters, a mobile app (for Apple and Androids), and the very popular Urban Events – Weekly Advertising Guide (WAG), an added incentive for print advertisers or for those who want to reach another market. Every Monday, WAG is published and distributed to more than 5,000 subscribers.

In September 2016 and in conjunction with the Montbello Organizing Committee, DUS expanded with the production of the Montbello Urban Spectrum Edition (MUSE), a bimonthly community newspaper dedicated to fostering the vision for Montbello and serving as a communication platform for the diverse interests of the Montbello community.

In August 2017, and to celebrate its 30 year history, DUS expanded with two online publications and websites reaching readers, viewers and communities in other parts of the country. Baltimore Urban Spectrum (BUS) and Gulf Coast Urban Spectrum (GCUS) debuted in conjunction with unified cover stories featuring Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock, Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh and Moss Point (MS) Mayor Mario King.
