Welcome to this video where DUS honors and celebrates the extraordinary life and lasting contributions of Dr. Alfonzo Porter. On March 12, 2023, Porter passed away unexpectedly at the age of 60, leaving behind a profound legacy in both academia and journalism. He was a dedicated educator, a guiding mentor to countless students at Metropolitan State University of Denver, and an impassioned journalist, publisher, and advocate for various societal issues.

Throughout his illustrious career, Porter remained steadfastly committed to community journalism, fearlessly covering critical topics such as education, mental health, and police brutality. He served on numerous community boards, leaving an indelible mark on Colorado’s media landscape. In 2020, he founded Blizzy Magazine, shedding light on the cannabis industry and the individuals of color who played pivotal roles within it.

Porter’s unwavering dedication to education, mentorship, leadership, and community engagement was evident throughout his academic journey. He earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from MSU Denver in 1987, followed by a Master of Arts in Educational Policy and Leadership from Ohio State University. He went on to attain a doctorate in Administration of Teaching and Learning from Walden University.

In addition to his teaching career, Porter authored several influential books, including “Digital Citizenship: Promoting Wellness for Thriving in a Connected World.” This work emphasized the critical importance of addressing the social, emotional, and mental well-being of students navigating the complexities of a digital age. In 1999, he founded Porter Education and Communications Inc., and later served as the managing partner and publisher at Vertex Learning LLC, specializing in educational materials, textbooks, as well as fiction and nonfiction titles.

Porter was the editor for the Denver Urban Spectrum and a professor at Metropolitan State University (MSU) Denver.
