Denver Black Arts Festival wants your participation. Are you looking to have fun this summer?  Enjoy working with people? Better yet, got time on your hands and not sure what to do? The Denver Black Arts Festival is looking for volunteers to serve in various positions/areas during the 2008 Black Arts Festival July 11, 12 and 13. Calling All Drummers
Drummers of all styles, skill levels and ages are invited to join the sound of one thousand drums for the Colorado premiere of Symphony for 1000 Drums to be performed later this summer.
The Symphony for 1000 Drums will be conducted on August 22 in Fort Collins under the direction of world-renown composer Halim El-Dabh. At age 87, Egyptian-born El-Dabh continues to write at a frenetic pace for opera, orchestra, electronica and beyond.
The symphony will perform on the opening day of festivities for A Peace Corps Celebration to be held August 22-24.
Hundreds of drummers will collaborate to bring the diversity of rhythmic sound, from marching band to ethnic/world percussion, orchestral, rock and drum circle styles.
Drummers with a passion for creativity and new experiences are invited to be a part of this once in a lifetime opportunity.

7th Annual Soul Rebel  Festival Planned
The 7th annual Soul Rebel Festival will be held Saturday July 12, at Guercio Field on Barker Reservoir in Nederland, Colorado from noon to dusk. The Soul Rebel Festival is an annual grass roots Reggae Afro Pop music festival held in Boulder and is the manifestation of Ujama News, an innovative and cultural magazine that informs, entertains and educates with thought provoking, comprehensive information based on the unique Afro Centric heritage.

The 8th Annual City Park Festival Of The Arts
In celebration of community, the City Park Neighborhood will hold an all-day arts and entertainment festival on July 20, 2008 from noon 6 p.m. at Ferril Lake in City Park.

Back-to-school Fair Offers Resources To Homeless And Low-Income Families
On Saturday, August 9, Catholic Charities will hold the 11th annual Peace ‘n the Streets Health & Safety Fair, a community event which prepares, on average, more than 1,500 homeless and low-income individuals for the start of a new school year.
Children who bring their shot records will receive free immunizations and free medical and dental screenings. Those who complete the bicycle safety class will receive free bicycle helmets. Parents can stock up on basic school supplies, receive new, professionally installed car seats, and gather important health and safety information at over 40 educational booths.
There will be free food, games, entertainment and children’s activities.
The fair will begin at 11am in Five Points’ Curtis Mestizo Park, located at 31st and Curtis Street in Denver. Parents should bring a copy of their child’s shot record in preparation for the health screenings.

Summer College Workshop
The Center for African American Policy at the University of Denver will host its annual Summer College Workshop: Mapping Your Future…Planning for College Success, Friday, Aug. 1–Sunday, August 3. The workshop is intended for African American high school students from the Denver metropolitan area. The workshop will be held on the campus of the University of Denver.
Workshop sessions will feature such topics as: How to Get Ready for College, Financial Aid, Assessment Testing, Interviewing for College Admission and Essay Writing.  There will be entertainment by the Black Hand Drum Ensemble.
The $60 non-refundable application fee includes all meals during the workshop, accommodations in the university dormitories, all meeting sessions and one outside activity.
In addition to the workshop, the African American Alumni Association of the University of Denver will host a parent reception on Saturday, Aug. 2.

Jordan AME Church, located at 2900 Milwaukee St., will celebrate its annual Family and Friends Weekend on July 25 through July 27. Rebirth Of Denver’s Juneteenth Available On KBDI
“Colorado’s Juneteenth Festival,” an episode of “Studio 12” on Channel 12 KBDI, is available for viewing via the video-on-demand feature on www.kbdi.org. Host Tamara Banks and panelists Brother Jeff Fard, from Brother Jeff’s Cultural Center & Café, Linda Colbert, of the Colorado Council for Urban Youth Development, Blair-Caldwell librarian Charleszine “Terry” Nelson and Jason Janz, pastor of Providence Bible Church, discussed the history of the Juneteenth celebration, as well as, the current development of the Five Points community.
Juneteenth is celebrated to commemorate the day the slaves in Texas heard the news of freedom. The Denver celebration was moved back to the Five Points community after a brief hiatus. The Black community stressed the importance of the Juneteenth celebration to their culture, and focus of this year’s celebration as the “rebirth.”

July Events For The Family At Denver Botanic Gardens
Free Day: Enjoy a special free day at Denver Botanic Gardens on Monday, July 21, thanks to funding from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD). The theme of this free day is The Glory of Summer.
Family Days: Bring the family to Denver Botanic Gardens on the weekends to explore the world of plants this summer. On selected weekends this summer, families can participate in a variety of fun garden activities and projects to take home. Activities will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each of the selected days. Families can drop in at any point during this period and stay as desired.
2008 Fitness Walks & T’ai Chi:
Enjoy a fitness walk throughout Denver Botanic Gardens in its early morning glory Tuesday morning through August 26 from 7 to 9 a.m. Additionally, a T’ai Chi class will be offered from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m.
