City Announces Neighborhood Leadership And Networking Conference
Mayor John Hickenlooper and City leaders will host neighborhood and community organizations in a day of community-wide networking and neighborhood leadership training on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Coors Field. The conference agenda will include a lunch-time keynote address by Hickenlooper; presentations by local and national leaders on community building; workshops to address specific issues facing neighborhoods; small- and large-group decision-making sessions designed to define what strong neighborhoods look like; tips to identify effective strategies to promote neighborhoods; and opportunities for networking.

The conference will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. The goal is to encourage a shared vision for Denver’s diverse neighborhood and community groups, allow for collaboration in building stronger neighborhoods and lead to action on a block-by-block basis.

CatFest Is For Cat Lovers
Cat lovers can mark their calendars for CatFest 2009 taking place on Saturday, July 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dumb Friends League, 2080 S. Quebec St. CatFest will feature educational and behavior information on cats, a purebred cat exhibition, fun games and activities, vendor booths selling cat-related merchandise and much more. The fest will also feature cats and kittens ready for adoption. Admission is free.

Tennis Mixed With Art And Culture At DBAF And Colorado Dragon Boat Festival
In conjunction with the Denver Black Arts Festival on July 11 and the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival on July 25, USTA Colorado will host the Celebrating Diversity TennisFest Series. By marrying arts and culture with athletics, participants will have access to community resources and information about various tennis programs offered throughout the city. In addition, festival goers will be able to participate in a healthy family activity in a fun festive environment while learning the benefits of the great, life-long sport of tennis. 

Partnering with Denver Parks and Recreation, a variety of tennis activities will be conducted including QuickStart Tennis, a new learning format for kids 10 and under. New players are encouraged to come out and participate in free tennis instruction and games for all ages and abilities. At the Denver Black Arts Festival only, an Adult Tennis Social for more experienced players will take place, including drills, food and social competition. The cost for the social is $10.

Community Sharing Program
The Celebration of Families-Students Inc is inviting the community to an Educational Intergenerational Community Sharing Program on Saturday, July 11 at 3 p.m. at St. Luke AME Church located at 3445 Madison St. Admission is free. A social hour follows the program. 

Nominations For National Philanthropy Day In Colorado

Nominations are sought for an outstanding volunteer, philanthropist or fundraising professional for the celebration of National Philanthropy Day in Colorado. Awardees, who may be a business or corporation, foundation, youth or youth group, as well as those who nominated them will be honored at the Annual National Philanthropy Day in Colorado Luncheon on Friday, Nov. 13 at Denver Marriot City Center.

Nationwide, National Philanthropy Day is a special day set aside each November to celebrate and recognize the many generous people who donate their time, talent, and financial resources to important causes all over the country. Awards will be presented in 10 categories: Large Business or Corporation, Small Business or Corporation, Foundation, Philanthropist, Service Organization, Professional in Philanthropy, Volunteer, Volunteer Fund Raiser, Youth and Youth Group. 

Nomination forms are available and can be downloaded or completed online at npdcolorado.org/nomination.htm and are also available by calling 303-744-1688. Nominations must be postmarked or electronically submitted by July 10.  Each nomination must include a nomination form, a response to the nomination questions and two letters of support.  
 

Free Progressive Candidate Training This August
If you are interested in running for elected office or serving as a campaign manager in the next year or two, then this upcoming free Candidate Training may be just for you.

The training is sponsored by the Center for Progressive Leadership, the White House Project and the Colorado Education Association. It is designed to help individuals develop the skills and resources they need to advance progressive change through local elected office. The Center for Progressive Leadership is actively working to fill a void in Progressive Leadership Training by investing in recruitment, training and building future candidates and grassroots activists across the country and in the state of Colorado.

This Candidate Training will be held over the course of three weekends (five days total) and will provide participants with the nuts and bolts of putting together a successful campaign for a local elected position, as well as the fundamentals for implementing progressive policies through elected office.

Weekend workshop topics may include Fundraising, Message Development & Delivery, Campaign and Strategic Planning and Policy Leadership.

The 2009 workshops dates are: Aug. 1 and 2 in Colorado Springs; Aug. 15 and 16 in Denver and Aug. 22 in Colorado Springs

Denver Preschool Program “Passport to Preschool”
The Denver Preschool Program is a taxpayer-supported initiative that provides financial assistance (up to $1,250/month) to families in the city and county of Denver to send their children to preschool. Enrollment will be underway at a number of “Passport to Preschool” enrollment fairs on July 25 and Aug. 1. The enrollment fairs will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following locations:

July 25 - Hiawatha Davis Recreation Center (3334 Holly St.); La Alma Recreation Center (1325 W. 11th St.); and St. Cajetan’s Church (299 S. Raleigh)

Aug. 1 - Montclair Recreation Center (729 Ulster St.); Blackberries Ice Cream & Coffee (710 E. 26th Ave.); Montbello Recreation Center (15555 E. 53rd Ave.) 

Hazel Miller Birthday Concert To Benefit West African School
The Sisters of Loretto invite the local community to attend the Hazel Miller Birthday Concert on July 11, benefiting the Akokoamong School Project in Ghana, West Africa. The concert will take place at the Teikyo Loretto Heights Theatre from 7 to 9 p.m. All proceeds of the concert will benefit the building of the Akokoamong School and the many children in this small, rural town who currently do not have access to education.

The evening will include the musical stylings of Denver local songstress Hazel Miller as well as international musical artist Corey Harris and rhythmic percussion from visiting African drummers.

General Admission tickets are $30 each and patron tickets can be purchased for $60 each. A limited number of tickets are available and are expected to sell out quickly.

KGNU To Host Bling Fling Jewelry Recycling Fundraising Event
KGNU invites the public to bring their unwanted genuine gold, silver, and platinum jewelry to the Bling Fling on Monday, July 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Under the Snug at the Irish Snug located at 1201 E. Colfax Ave. and recycle it as a donation to benefit independent, community radio. Broken chains, old class rings and lonely earrings are all welcome (no costume jewelry). Donated jewelry will be sent to greenKarat.com, an ecologically responsible jewelry company that will recycle the metals into new jewelry. GreenKarat will send 80 percent of the current market value of the gold, sterling silver or platinum from your donation to KGNU. 

The Bling Fling happy hour event will also feature drinks, food, entertainment, silent auction items, door prizes and new jewelry for sale. A $10 donation will be requested at the door. 

Summer College Workshop For African American Students
The Center for New Policy and Politics (formerly Center African American Policy) at the University of Denver will host its annual Summer College Workshop: Advantage Point…Making Informed Choices For Your Educational Future on Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2 on the campus of the University of Denver. The primary impetus for establishing the workshop was the void in which students of African American descent find themselves when facing the daunting challenge of preparing for and selecting a college.

There is a $60 non-refundable application fee that includes all meals during the workshop, accommodations in the university dormitories, all meeting sessions and one outside activity.

The Summer College Workshop has accommodations for 60 students. Extended deadline for the Center to receive completed applications is June 26.
 

Free Online Webinar On Adopting African-American Infants
Adoptions From The Heart (AFTH), a licensed, non-profit adoption agency, will hold a free online webinar on Monday, July 13 at 7 p.m. EST. The focus of the webinar will be on the organization’s African-American and African-American Biracial Domestic Adoption programs.

There is a very short wait period for African-American applicants because the organization has an urgent need for African-American adoptive families for infants. The webinar is open to anyone living anywhere in the U.S., and will be led by an AFTH social worker who will be available to answer any questions.

A webinar is an online version of our free information meetings. Participants are emailed a link and a phone number that will connect them to the presentation. Online registration is available at www.gotomeeting.com/register/492443897.
