Celebration Of Life Concert To Benefit Traumatic Brain Injury
Join M*SHAKA*FUSION and Artistic Director Melanie D. Milow for the Cracked Dome benefit concert featuring live dance and music, Friday, June 19,  at 7 p.m. at the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theatre, 119 Park Avenue West in Denver. 

This benefit concert will edutain and touch the souls of the diverse array of communities that make up Denver with proceeds going to help cover medical, legal, and other expenses as Ms. Milow undergoes treatment and healing for a traumatic brain injury she sustained in February of 2007. In addition to raising funds for Melanie, this event also serves to bring attention to the issues surrounding the Mild to Moderate Traumatic Brain Injured, and the various organizations, local and statewide that serve them. A portion of the proceeds will be made to The Brain Trust in Boulder. 

Born and raised in Flint, MI, Milow received a Bachelor of Arts in both Psychology and Dance and a Master of Fine Arts in Performance and Choreography. Since relocating to Denver, Milow has been an active independent dance artist and founder of M*SHAKA*FUSION production company. She has served on the boards and committees of performing arts organizations, and served two years as a Professor of Dance at Metro State College of Denver, as well as a guest artist/lecturer at the University of Wyoming.

District 8 Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social
Councilwoman Carla Madison invites constituents of District 8 to an Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social on Friday, June 5 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the City Park Pavilions.  

District 8 constituents are welcome to come and enjoy an evening of music with the 40 piece Denver Municipal Jazz Band set against the beautiful backdrop of the Prismatic Electric Fountain.  

The theme will recreate the early 1900’s era and attendees who are interested can dress in costume from this time period. There will be a hat making area with hats for purchase to decorate or just bring one along to dress up with ribbons and feathers. High wheeler bicycles from will be on hand, along with a Model T or two. Children’s entertainment will include a juggler and face painting. 

Pack a picnic dinner and head on down to the City Park Pavilions on Ferril Lake, Friday, June 5 and expect to have a grand old time with ice cream sundaes for everyone.

Gospel stage taking shape for Black Arts Festival  
The 23rd Annual Denver Black Arts Festival (DBAF) to be held at Denver City Park on July 10-12 is preparing for a pumped-up gospel extravaganza on the F. Cosmo Harris Gospel stage.  

Local groups confirmed to perform on the gospel stage include Shelley Lindsey, Michael Williams and Eternal Life, Kim Boston and Unleashed, The Northeast District COGIC, His and Her Anointed and God’s Girlz, Tyree Moore and Parts of Worship, As One Ministries, the Colorado Christian Fellowship Choir and Praise Team, as well as Mary McNeil Jones and Pete Rankin. Other special guests include Largressa Munnerlyn.

Artist Greg Sommer At Blair Caldwell African American Research Library Gallery
Greg Sommer exhibits his illustrated ‘dive’ drawings at Blair Caldwell African American Research Library’s from June 1 to 30 on the third floor gallery. The library is located in the Historic Five Points neighborhood at 2401 Welton St. in Denver. 

Library and gallery hours are Mondays and Tuesdays from noon to 8 p.m.; Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Thursdays and Sundays.

Delta Eta Hosts Annual Boule, Denim and Diamonds 
Delta Eta Boule presents Denim and Diamonds on June 20 at the Seawell Ballroom beginning at 7 p.m.  Proceeds from the event will support scholarships and life skills programs for young African American men. 

Since April 1998, the Delta Eta foundation has awarded nearly $140,000 in college scholarships to young men competitively selected from metro Denver high schools. Each scholarship is for four years. This year’s fundraiser will launch the Boule Academy. 

This event promises to be unforgettable and fun-filled. The Seawell Ballroom will be transformed into a nightclub and feature a high-octane fashion show with some of the best denim fashions from around the country. An open bar and delectable food will be offered throughout the evening. Bring your dancing shoes to party to non-stop music by Jakarta. Wear a splash of denim to get with the theme of the evening.

CPRD 15th Anniversary International Summer Dance Institute Begins In June
Since 1994, the International Summer Dance Institute (ISDI) “One Spirit Many Voices” has been the premiere program for intensive dance training and cultural enrichment in the West. The four-week artist-in-residence program hosts some of the dance world’s most extraordinary artists at the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance School. The Institute provides expert instruction in various techniques of Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Modern, African and Cultural Dance.  

Four weeks of intensive dance training are offered Monday, June 29 through Friday, July 24, culminating with professional auditions on Saturday July 25 at 12:30 p.m.  A week long Children’s Week Day Camp for students ages 5 to 12 runs Monday, July 6 to Friday, July 11 with orientation for children and their parents on Sunday, July 5. The children attend camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and finish the week with a”Pamoja Celebration” (Cultural Showcase Performance) and African Market, Saturday, July 11.  

This year’s Institute faculty includes Kofi and Amma Anang (West African), Mauli Ola Cook (Hawai’ian), Adela Chu (Panamanian), Milton Myers (Horton Modern), Halifu Osumare (Dunham Modern), Nathan Trice and Lawrence Jackson  (Modern), DeeAnna Hiett (Contemporary), Moncell Durden (Hip Hop) and Denver’s own Alicia Karczewski (Jazz) and Robert Sher-Macherndl (Ballet). Cleo Parker Robinson herself will be teaching a very special Cleodance class for one day only on Friday, July 24.

New Summer Youth Program Set For July 
Shadow Theatre Company, in partnership with the Aurora Symphony Orchestra presents its 2009 Summer Youth Program formerly known as CRUNK. This program will provide a journey of creative expression and awe. Classes, taught by local theatre professionals, will engage the youth in the many facets of live performance, as well as provide them with information on strategies for realizing their long term artistic goals. Classes and workshops will incorporate acting, orchestral music, dance, singing, production, stage production, writing, personal reflection, and will culminate in a show written by the participants in collaboration with a professional playwright.  

The program is open to youth ages 13-18 and will run for five weeks, July 7 to August 5, Tuesday through Friday  from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program ends with two weekend performances.   

There is no fee for this program. The application process is competitive; requiring both an application and an audition. Students who remain in good standing will receive a stipend upon graduation from the program. Applications are due June 19 and are online at www.shadowtheatre.com.

KGNU’s 8th Annual Fundraising Garden Party And Artist Craft Sale
Plant a new garden this year and support KGNU Community Radio.  KGNU is hosting their 8th annual Garden Party on Saturday, June 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 4700 Walnut in Boulder, CO. 

Get a jump on the garden this year and load up on new seedlings and plant starts for your garden at the KGNU Garden Party.  If you are pruning or thinning your garden, pot up some “starts” or seedlings and donate them to the Garden Party. Contributions of bedding plants, vegetables, annuals, houseplants or perennials are needed. All plants need to come potted and ready to sell. Name of plant and care tips are also very helpful. Donations of plants are being accepted through Thursday June 4. No donations of plants on day of sale will be accepted.     

Crafts for this sale will include one of a kind furniture, handcrafted jewelry, acrylic paintings, contemporary quilt work and handmade cigar box guitars.  

Experienced gardeners will be on hand for advice. All the plants are sold at bargain prices. Gardening books will be raffled and there will be gardening tools available for sale.
