This is the time of year when families begin to spend more
time together. After celebrating Mother’s Day and looking forward to Father’s
Day, it’s also time to start planning family vacations, reunions and going to
community events.
In honor of Father’s Day, this month, Denver Urban Spectrum pays tribute to
Charles “Brother” Cousins, aka the “Father of Five Points.” Annette Walker
takes us on his journey of life and talks about three generations of Cousins.
Emily Mukasa shares the joy and pain of being a single father and tells us
about one organization that is making a difference for them. And David
Whitney talks about the 100th anniversary of Father’s Day, what it really
means, and the plans to celebrate across the country.
Did you know June is Black Music Month? In recognition, and beginning with this
issue, DUS will feature local talent from the metro Denver area. Read what
Misti Aas finds out about his life as she interviews multi-talented musician
Ron Ivory. And Laura Anderson takes us on the trail of Porter Lori and
his journey as an upcoming singer from Aurora now living in LA.
And don’t forget the fun! The annual Juneteenth and Denver Black Arts Festival
are soon approaching. TaShia Asanti talks about the past, present, and future
plans for Juneteenth. Earth Wind and Fire will be appearing at Fiddler’s Green.
The Aspen Jazz Festival will feature Smoky Robinson and in August the
Breckenridge Genuine Jazz Festival promises three days of fine jazz and wine.
And the Delta Eta Boule is coming!
So, whoever said there is nothing to do in Denver - open your eyes, kick up
your feet, grab a cool drink and read the Spectrum! Entertainment is
abundant. This year, in addition to the children, go get Mom and Dad and enjoy
some family fun - because every day is Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
Peace and blessings
