Funky Cool Art For Hot Summer Days

The Sankofa Arts Alliance presents "Funky Cool Art," an art show featuring new works by Juliette Hemingway at the Blair Caldwell African American Research Library gallery.

The show runs June 4-30 and is free and open to the public. Library hours are Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed on Thursday and Sunday. Blair Caldwell African-American Research Library is located on 2401 Welton St. in Denver.

Tee Up ‘Fore’ Health Slated For August

The 2nd Annual Tee Up ‘Fore’ Health golf tournament benefiting the Faith To Be Healthy Ministry of the Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church will be held Friday, Aug. 8.  The tournament will be at the Aurora Hills Golf Course. Registration fee is $95 per person.  For more information, registration forms or to help sponsor this event, call Cheryl Pegues at 303-680-3693 or e-mail capegues45@comcast.net.  

 

The PIRATE Inaugural Golf Tournament Set For July

The PIRATE Inaugural Golf Tournament will be held July 11 at the Park Hill Golf Course, located at 4141 E. 35th Ave  The format will be a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. and the normal longest drive, closest to the pin efforts will be awarded.  There will be free beverages (non-alcoholic) offered during rounds of golf.  Free lunch buffet will be provided during the award ceremonies with giveaways, a silent auction of sports memorabilia from Denver born professional athletes. Women teams are strongly encouraged to enter and will be recognized separately. Cost is $85 per person or $300 for a team of four. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Seminar On Providing Services To The Transgender Population

TransAction, a program of It Takes a Village, presents a half day seminar on June 10 at the Blair Caldwell Library, 2401 Welton Street, geared towards educating service providers and the public about the transgender community and their specific needs. TransAction is managed by and focuses on transgenders providing HIV prevention, advocacy, weekly discussion groups, outreach, substance abuse treatment and referrals for services. Lunch will be provided at 12 p.m. Seminar starts at 12:30 p.m. Space is limited, so register early.

District 7 Unity Dinner Focus On DNC

All Democrats are invited to a Unity Dinner on June 7 at the Embassy Suites Hotel on I-70 and Havana St. Attendees will learn about the preparations for the national Convention in August from featured speaker Elbra Wedgeworth. Tickets are $35 per person or $75 including admission to the VIP reception preceding the dinner.

Denver Host City For Black Catholic Youth Conference

Denver will host the Black Catholic Youth Conference from June 5 to 8 at the Renaissance Denver Hotel. Approximately 100 black, Catholic youth ages 7 to 18, from eight states will be in Denver for a weekend of business meetings, workshops, an awards’ banquet, and a group community service project.

The Art Students League of Denver’s Summer Art Market is returning for its 16th year. Summer Art Market 2008 will showcase the work of over 200 artists, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 14 and 15 at the Art Students League of Denver, 200 Grant Street in West Washington Park.

Registration Underway For Adults 50+

A new Learning Network for adult learners age 50 and older, presented by the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center and Metro State College of Denver, debuts this summer at Mizel Museum, 400 S. Kearney St. The college-level classes will include discussions and assigned readings – but no exams or term papers, because these classes are not for credit.

Danskin’s To Host Women’s Multi Sport Event In Denver  

Danskin will host its women’s multi-sport event for the 13th consecutive year at 7 a.m. on June 29 at the Aurora Reservoir, located at 5800 South Powhaton Rd. The Denver Danskin Race is a 1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike ride, and 3.1 mile run. Participants must be age 14 or older.

Program Creates Opportunity For Local Youth

Mile High Youth Corps is currently hiring 25 low-income, metro-area youth to participate in YouthBuild, an education and construction-training program. In this program, youth have the opportunity to earn a GED and a paycheck while learning construction trades by working on a Denver Housing Authority development in the Five Points neighborhood. MHYC pays for all GED classroom instruction and tests. The next YouthBuild session runs from June 16 through Dec. 12.

Super Summer Of Shows Scheduled At Mizel

The Mizel Arts and Culture Center (MACC), one of the Rocky Mountain region’s premier arts organizations, brings in three of Denver’s award-winning directors, Billie McBride, Nick Sugar and Steve Wilson, for the 2008 Summer Mainstage productions at the Shwayder Theatre. The productions are Seussical directed by Billie McBride; Macbeth directed by Steve Wilson; and High School Musical directed by Nick Sugar.
