Well, it’s finally here and none too soon to enjoy the many
summer events happening in the Mile High City. From concerts to music
festivals, music lovers will have their choice of enjoying top-notch
entertainment this month and July. Many of those events are found in the pages
of this issue.
At the top of the list is Juneteenth 2008: The Rebirth,
which will be held on Saturday, June 14 in the historic Five Points community.
Contributor LisaMarie Martinez provides an in-depth perspective on this
African-American holiday. She looks at the past through the eyes of elders,
talks to the community about their views on Juneteenth, and discusses future
plans with the festival organizers.
In honor of Black Music Month, Jan McNutt gives us an up
close and personal look at blues man Tommy “Working Man” Thomas. Find out what
made him the person he is today and why.
And, Liz Andrews reviews Traces of the Trade: A Story of the Deep North,
a documentary film that illuminates the legacy of slavery through descendants
of the largest slave-trading family in United States history.
So, take advantage of it while we have it – get out and
enjoy the hot sun and happy reading!
