Dear
DUS Reader: Thanks for picking up another edition of the Denver Urban Spectrum, the
people’s journal that has been successfully spreading the news about people of
color in Colorado
for the past 20 years! As the new editor of this great newspaper, I’m excited
over the opportunity and the challenges of bringing you news and information
you can use effectively to learn, teach, grow, nurture and live balanced lives
that may sustain you in that quest for peace, justice and genuine democracy. So
please join me as we learn about the dynamic journey of Khalilah Ali, second
wife of boxing legend, Muhammad Ali, in an exclusive interview with DUS
contributing editor Ifalade Ta’Shia Asanti, and four Black women pioneers,
including Madam C.J. Walker, who made historic strides in Colorado and the
nation, racism and anti-feminism notwithstanding, in a profile by Laura
Anderson. The talents of Mario Acevedo, the budding Chicano superstar novelist
and author of The Nymphos of Rocky Flats,
are explored in a short but
compelling interview by John Kuebler, and award-winning columnist Dave Zirin
probes the government’s and baseball’s Barry Bonds obsession. There’s also the
push for a United States of Africa by Muammar Al-Quaddafi, new chairperson of
the African Union, reported by columnist Akbar Muhammad; and finally, this: “
…when crimes of deceit, fraud, ponzi schemes and the like are uncovered, the
perpetrators should not be bailed out, they should be jailed!” That last from
nationally-syndicated columnist Lucius Gantt, whose grassroots approaches to
righting (writing) wrongs you will not want to miss! So read, enjoy, learn and
send us feedback, praise and critiques. We want to hear from you.
Luv ‘n struggle, Roger K. Clendening, Editor editor@urbanspectrum.net
